Tour of Battenkill Day 1

Tour of Battenkill Day 1

20130412_154248_resizedWow, that was one helluva course. Totally kicked my ass. There were 84 of us 45+ Masters at the line, and we rolled out pretty easy for the 1st 5 miles. Then we hit the iconic Battenkill covered bridge and all hell broke loose. The field was stringing out and I did my best to hang on. We hit the dirt at mile 9 and I was pleasantly surprised. Very firm, even after all the rain they’ve had. And fairly smooth to, nothing like Barry-Roubaix a few weeks back. So I was feeling confident, but then the first big climb came. I was ok though, and a few guys were going in reverse. But I must have stretched my rear derailleur cable and couldn’t hold a gear. I guess that’s the chance you take when the 1st ride on your new bike is a RACE. So there went the field. I jumped off for a quick adjustment and dialed it in ok. But no chance of getting back on. So I fell in with a 3 other stragglers and we tried to help each other out. The new Ridley climbed like a dream, so I ended up leaving those guys and found a young fella from Illinois who had a mechanical on an earlier wave. 20130413_094259_resizedWe worked together well until the last killer climb where he fell back. So I had to solo to the line the last 4-5 miles. Came in @ 3:31, the winners more than ½ hour ahead of me. Oh well, I had a great first-time experience at Battenkill. It’s now 5:30 am the next morning and my legs feel pretty good. 50+ Masters starts at 9:50, so here we go again. I’m hoping that with some course knowledge and a dialed in bike that I can hang with the group today. Stay tuned…
